about

Know What It's Like by Lack The Low is a dark and impassioned reflection on increasingly fractured times, released at a time when the very fabric of democracy feels under threat - an idea that seemed impossible only a few years ago.

Told through Lack The Low's characteristic combination of intense vocals and heavily processed instrumentation, Know What It's Like acknowledges that the pandemic has often served to heighten rather than heal division; as we lose touch with one another on both a micro and macro scale.

Lack The Low is the project of Melbourne-based multi-instrumentalist and composer Kat Hunter. Know What It's Like was produced by Kat in her home studio and follows her 2018 debut One Eye Closed (described as "a cosmic event of a record" by Sputnik Music).

Never taking any one route for granted, Lack The Low paves a path between pop immediacy and the ambiguousness of the avant-garde. The resulting world is one in which ear worm hooks coexist with odd time signatures and complex chord progressions - a volatile mix of pop, math rock, post-classical and noise, delivered with unfettered honesty.

As evidenced on Know What It's Like, Hunter takes an uncompromising approach to achieving her vision, staying at the helm of the writing, performing, sound design and recording processes, and performing most of the instruments herself.

lyrics

LYRICS:

Shaking with fear, a face awash with tears,
I’ll shut me down into the gutter where it might be safest
Violence moves in cycles until it stops with either peace or death of everything it touches
You could be kind or benevolent but why when you know how the kids demand another public hanging
So stand underneath a banner of belief and see how any cruelty will lend you gold and roses

Deafening cheers and proselytising sound forth from a crowd who stands behind the man who is most dangerous
Joining the fray, you thought a little bloodsport wouldn’t hurt until you become the one who’s hunted

I know what it’s like and I almost died
